
Plugs offer a convenient sealing solution for pipes. If a pipe has an uncovered end, you can always remove or replace the pipe. Alternatively, you can seal it with a plug. There are many different types of plugs, however. High-pressure hex socket plugs, for instance, feature a unique design that allows them to withstand pressurized environments without leaking or failing.
What Are High-Pressure Hex Socket Plugs?
High-pressure hex socket plugs are fittings designed to cover and seal the ends of pressurized pipes. They are commonly used in hydraulic systems, pneumatic equipment, gearboxes, pumps, valves, manifolds and other pressurized environments. Unlike standard plugs, high-pressure hex socket plugs are specifically engineered to handle high internal pressures — all while maintaining a tight seal around the pipe end with which they are used.
How High-Pressure Hex Socket Plugs Work
Hex socket plugs work primarily via threading. As shown in the image above, they feature a base with exterior threading. You can use them to seal the end of a threaded pipe. Just take the high-pressure hex socket plug and screw it into the pipe’s threaded end. Once tightened to the recommended torque, it will create a pressure-tight seal to prevent liquids or gases from leaking.
Many high-pressure hex socket plugs also feature a specialized sealing surface, such as an elastomeric O-ring or washer. As you screw in the high-pressure socket plug, the sealing surface will press against the pipe.
Internal Hex Socket Explained
High-pressure hex socket plugs use a hex drive type. In other words, they are tightened and loosened using a hex key.
Hex keys consist of an L-shaped piece of metal with six sides. You can use them to tighten or loosen a high-pressure hex socket plug. Simply place the hex key inside of the plug’s drive recess — the recess is typically in the center of the plug — and turn it clockwise. Turning the hex key clockwise will move the high-pressure hex socket plug forward and into the pipe. You can also loosen and remove the plug by turning the hex key counterclockwise.
Why do high-pressure hex socket plugs use a hex drive type exactly? For starters, it promotes a clean and flush appearance. The plug itself can remain round, allowing it to match the round design of the pipe with which it’s used. A hex drive type also makes installation a breeze. Even if you’re working in a confined space, you should still be able to place a small hex key inside of the plug.
