
Vents are commonly used in HVAC systems, automotive appliances, machinery and enclosures. Typically consisting of a thin sheet of metal with an array of openings, they provide a path for airflow. Air can flow into and out of a given space through a vent. While there are different styles of vents, however, many feature louvers.
What Are Louvers?
Louvers are angled slats on the front of a vent. You can identify them by running your hand across the front surface. If you feel slats protruding slightly out, the vent has louvers. If the front feels flat and smooth, it doesn’t have louvers.
Louvers are almost always angled down, with the opening at the bottom. They are also typically fixed, meaning you can’t close them or adjust their angle. Regardless, louvers are simply angled slats on the front of a vent.
Facilitates Airflow
The primary purpose of louvers is to facilitate the flow of air. Louvers have openings through which air can flow. Stale air can leave a given space via the louvers on a vent, and fresh air can enter a given space through the louvers.
Louvers don’t just allow air to enter and leave a given space; they guide the flow of air. On most vents, louvers are angled down. This downward angle guides the flow of air. Rather than blowing straight out, air will blow at a downward angle similar to that of the vent’s louvers.
Keeps Out Rain and Moisture
Louvers also prevent rain and moisture from entering ventilation systems. They essentially act as awnings for vents. If rain or moisture drips down onto a vent, it will simply run down the louvers without entering the ventilation system.
Without louvers, rain and moisture may enter ventilation systems through the openings on vents. This can lead to a wide range of problems, such as mold growth, corrosion and damage to electrical components. Louvers prevent such problems by guiding rain and moisture away from the vent’s openings.
Keeps Out Dirt and Debris
Another reason vents have louvers is to prevent the intrusion of dirt and debris. Many ventilation systems run from indoor spaces to the outdoors where they can exchange stale air with fresh air. The problem with such systems, however, is that dirt and debris may enter.
Leaves, pollen, dust and dirt can enter ventilation systems through vent openings. And just rain and moisture, debris can cause extensive damage. Fortunately, louvers protect ventilation systems from damage by keeping out dirt and debris. They cover the front of a vent’s openings, which makes it very difficult for dirt and debris to enter.
