When shopping for washers, you may encounter swing “C” washers. They don’t look like traditional disc-shaped washers with a hollow center. Rather, swing “C” washers feature a C-like shape that allows them to swing open from the fastener or hardware with which they are used. Overview of Swing “C” Washers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Swing “C” washers are fasteners with a concave, open center. They come with a bolt, which is used to tighten or loosen them. Swing “C” washers also have a hole in the center that supports a separate bolt or threaded fastener. A portion of the side has been cut out to provide access to this hole. This unique design results in a C-like shape, which is why they are known as swing “C” washers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

H0w Swing “C” Washers Work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Swing “C” washers work like most other types of washers by distributing the load of the fastener with which they are used across a larger surface area. The hole in the center of a swing “C” washer supports a threaded fastener, such as a bolt. You can fasten two or more parts, of course, by driving a bolt through them. Rather than only using a bolt, though, you may want to use a washer like a swing “C” washer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bolt will press against the top of the swing “C” washer, thereby distributing its load. As a result, the bolt’s load won’t be concentrated in a small area; it will spread across the entire top surface of the washer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benefits of Swing “C” Washers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While most washers can distribute the load of a bolt, swing “C” washers are unique because of their ability to swing open. You can easily insert or remove them — without completely removing the bolt itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To install a traditional washer on a bolt, you’ll typically have to remove the bolt first. Only then will you be able to place the bolt through the washer. Swing “C’ washers, though, simplify this process. You can install a swing “C” washer by loosening the bolt. With the bolt loosened, you can slide the open side of the swing “C” washer around the bolt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Construction of Swing “C” Washers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can find swing “C” washers made of different materials. Some of them are made of stainless steel, whereas others are made of high-carbon steel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finishes for swing “C” washers can also vary. Black oxide is a popular finish in which swing “C” washers are made.
