Known as marine lights, they are designed to withstand moisture. They feature a sealed design that protects the enclosed filament or diode from the elements. There are many different types of marine lights, however. Below are five of the most common types of marine lights.

#1) Tab Lights

Tab lights are a common type of marine lights. Also known as trim tab lights, they receive their namesake from their mounting location. Tab lights are mounted near a boat’s trim tabs. They are typically installed directly above the trim tabs where they provide underwater illumination. When turned on, tab lights will project underwater lighting for activities such as swimming, fishing, improved nighttime visibility and general ambiance.

#2) Drain Plug Lights

Many boats have drain plug lights. Like tab lights, they are waterproof and designed for underwater usage. Drain plug lights are essentially lights that connect to a boat’s drain hole. Drain holes typically feature a plug, known as a drain plug, to prevent leaks. You can drain the water from a boat by removing the drain plug after taking the boat out of the water. For underwater illumination, though, you can replace the drain plug with a drain plug light.

#3) Surface Mount

Surface mount marine lights are characterized by their ability to be mounted to the surface of a boat’s hull. They are available in different sizes, lighting technologies and brightness levels. Some of them are also designed for underwater usage. Regardless, you can mount them directly to the surface of a boat’s hull, allowing for quick and easy installation.

#4) Anchor Lights

There are also anchor lights. As the name suggests, anchor lights are used when anchors are deployed. Most places require boats to use anchor lights at night when outside of designated anchorage spots. It’s a safety precaution that reduces the risk of collisions and accidents by making anchored boats easier to see. When turned on, anchor lights will emit a bright white light that’s visible from far away.

#5) Spotlights

Spotlights are a common type of marine light. Spotlights differ from other types of marine lights by projecting a narrow beam of light. While other types of marine lights typically emit a wide beam of light, spotlights are more focused and narrow. This allows them to reach longer distances.

Lights are commonly used on boats, ships and docks.
