You can find them in different styles. Wave washers with overlap, for instance, have a curved wave-like shape. To learn more about wave washers with overlap and how they work, keep reading.

The Basics of Wave Washers With Overlap

Wave washers with overlap are fastening components consisting of a metal wavy ring with an overlap. They consist of a thin piece of metal formed into a series of waves. As their name suggests, they feature an overlap as well. One of the ends essentially lies on top of the other end, resulting in an overlap.

When to Use Wave Washers With Overlap

When should you use wave washers with overlap exactly? You may want to use them in applications involving bores. With overlapping ends, they act as spring washers to minimize binding or unwanted movement. Wave washers with overlap will compress when placed inside a bore so that binding is less likely to occur.

Wave washers with overlap are commonly used to preload bearings. Once compressed, they apply an equal force to remove internal play. For machinery components, this often translates into a smoother and quieter operation.

Wave washers with overlap are particularly useful in tight spaces. Many mechanical assemblies lack the space for coil springs. After all, coil springs can be large and bulky. An alternative solution is to use a wave washer with overlap. They take up less axial height while replicating the resistive forces of coil springs.

Wave washers with overlap are often used for the following:

Rotating shafts

Electric motors

Gearboxes

Alternators

Starters

Avionics equipment

Valve stems

Pump shafts

Medical instruments

Diagnostic devices

How Wave Washers With Overlap Differ From Regular Washers

Wave washers with overlap aren’t the same as regular washers. Regular washers typically feature a round ring-like shape. Wave washers with overlap, on the other hand, feature a curved wave-like shape.

Regular washers have closed ends, resulting in a complete loop. Wave washers with overlap, in comparison, have open ends. One of the ends “overlaps” the other end, which is why they are known as “wave washers with overlap.”

Aside from being shaped differently, wave washers with overlap and regular washers are used for different purposes. Regular washers are used to distribute fastener loads. They are placed around threaded fasteners, such as bolts, to distribute their load across a larger surface area. Wave washers with overlap act as springs by compressing under force and pushing back against the respective parts to maintain tension.

Not all washers are perfectly round.
