Fastener Inc

When asked why they opened a fastener company, John and Helen Walker simply reply, “We thought selling nuts and bolts might be a good business to get into”. In 1965 The Walkers moved into their first warehouse, a building in Denver on 5th Ave by the Colfax viaduct with five kegs of nuts and bolts, a couple of desks and a sign reading Fasteners, Incorporated . John worked evenings and weekends while he continued a career with Samsonite as an engineer. Helen worked full time at the office splitting her time as buyer, order packer, sales staff, driver and book keeper.

With business growing and encouragement (also insistence) from Helen, John left his position with Samsonite in 1969 and put his full attention to the fastener business. John and Helen outgrew the building on 5th Ave, and in 1970 they moved to 788 South Broadway. In the 70’s drywall screws and construction screws were a big part of Fastener’s business. A relationship with Huck Fasteners, a railroad and truck trailer fastener line, was established and became a premier line which still continues today.

In 1982 the warehouse was moved to 1895 West Dartmouth. A computer system was installed and the inventory was moved from being maintained on a kardex system to Faspac’s distribution software. Both locations serviced customers until 1986 when all fastener operations were moved to the West Dartmouth warehouse.

Western Electric was one of Fastener’s first big accounts and was really important in establishing the company as a viable nut and bolt company. John remembered Western Electric had a unique policy of placing a new purchase order for each different product they bought. It wasn’t unusual to see a PO that may have three ¼-20 hex nuts on it, although they may send a hundred PO’s in a day. When Western Electric moved from Denver to North Carolina they continued to buy their fasteners from John and Helen because of the excellent way they were treated.

In order to better service outlying areas two new branch office/warehouses were opened. In 1983 a branch was opened in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Today, forty seven years later, Fasteners Inc continues to be a successful fastener distribution company headquartered on West Dartmouth in Denver, Colorado. The Walker’s philosophy of building relationships with their customers, taking care of their customer’s needs and having inventory to support them, still drives the business fundamentals and will continue to do so long into the future.
