United States Vice President Mice Pence recently published an article on the WhiteHouse.gov in which declared that “American Manufacturing is Back.”
It’s no secret that the American manufacturing industry has been on the decline in recent years. After World War II, this sector was responsible for creating countless jobs while strengthening the nation’s economy. Some analysts even believe the post-WWII manufacturing sector was responsible for establishing the country’s middle class. In the 1990s, however, American manufacturing began trending in the opposite direction because of factors such as globalized free trade and overseas competition. This resulted in the off-shoring of tens of thousands of American jobs, weakening the manufacturing sector and hurting the economy as a whole.
However, it appears that the American manufacturing is beginning to regain its strength as a world leader. In the article cited above, Pence discusses the industry and how it’s changed. Pence specifically mentions Tendon Manufacturing, a manufacturing company that was started in Ohio some 30 years ago with just half-a-dozen employees. Since then, Tendon Manufacturing has grown to employ more than 75 employees.
Pence also mentions Trump’s policy of “Buy American and Hire American” as a fundamental driver of the American manufacturing industry. As the name suggests, this policy encourages consumers to buy American-made products, and for employers to hire American workers. This one-two punch aims to strengthen the American manufacturing industry by reshoring jobs back to the United States.
Pence further explains that in the first five months of 2016, American manufacturing lost some 24,000 workers. While that number seems bad enough, there’s good news: since taking office, President Trump has strengthened the industry to create more than 600,000 jobs, 55,000 of which are in the manufacturing sector.
“President Trump promised to get the American economy moving again – and he’s done exactly that. As I’ve traveled the country on behalf of our President, coming to businesses just like Tendon Manufacturing in Ohio, I see each and every day that President Trump has turned our country around – and America is back,” wrote Pence on the official WhiteHouse.gov blog.
So, where is the American manufacturing industry headed from here? While there’s no way to predict the future, it’s safe to assume the industry will continue to grow, as President Trump and his administration continues to emphasize the “Buy American and Hire American” policy.
