What Are Ball Ring Handles and How Do They Work?

Quick release pins are available in a variety of styles, one of the most popular being ball ring handles. Like all quick release pins, they are used to temporarily fasten or secure moving parts. You can hold a moving part in a fixed position by placing a quick release pin in it. Removing the quick release pin, conversely, will release the moving part. Ball ring handles are used for these same applications, but they feature a unique design that distinguishes them from other types of quick release pins.

Overview of Ball Ring Handles

Ball ring handles are quick release pins that feature one or more ball detents. If you inspect the bottom of a ball ring handle, you’ll notice it has one or more balls sticking out the side. These ball detents are used to lock the ball ring handles in place.

Some ball ring handles feature a single ball detent, whereas others feature two ball detents. Regardless, they all have one or more ball detents.

How Ball Ring Handles Work

Most ball ring handles work by using a spring to move the ball detents. Within the cylindrical body of a ball ring handle is a spring. The spring applies pressure to a pin shaft.

When you press the button on top of a ball ring handle, you’ll engage the spring. The spring will push the pin shaft down, allowing the ball detent or detents to fall into a groove. The ball detent or detents will then recede into the ball ring handle. Pulling the ball ring handle will remove it from the part with which it’s used.

What to Look for When Choosing a Ball Ring Handle

There are several things you should look for when choosing a ball ring handle. For starters, make sure the ball detent or detents are made of a strong material. Stainless steel is commonly used for the ball detents. When made of stainless steel, ball detents will withstand corrosion while offering a smooth and reliable release action.

Don’t forget to consider the size when choosing a ball ring handle. It must be sized to fit the part with which you intend to use it. If the body is too wide or long, it may not fit.

You should consider the handle style when choosing a ball ring handle. Some ball ring handles feature a T-handle style, whereas others feature an L-handle style or even a ring handle style.
