Why Wood Screws Are Brass

Ever wonder why so many wood screws are made of brass? Wood screws are threaded fasteners designed specifically for wooden objects. They typically feature a sharp pointed tip and coarse threading, the latter of which allows them to grip the wooden objects in which they are driven. While you can find them in different materials, however, many wood screws are made of brass for the following reasons.

Excellent Grip Strength

Brass wood screws offer excellent grip strength. Grip strength refers to a threaded fastener’s ability to grip an object. While strong, brass is softer than other materials like steel. This unique combination of strength and softness allows brass wood screws to securely grip wooden objects.


Many people prefer brass wood screws over other materials because of their aesthetics. Brass has a naturally lustrous yellow-gold color. It offers a superior level of cohesion that complements most varieties of wood. Other materials like steel can’t compare to brass in this regard. Both high-carbon steel and stainless steel are silver. Unlike brass, silver doesn’t flow cohesively with wood.

Corrosion Resistance

Another reason wood screws are made of brass is to protect against corrosion. When exposed to moisture, threaded fasteners may corrode. Corrosion is an electrochemical reaction between a given object and substances in its environment. It’s often caused by moisture, which is present in wood. Wood screws are regularly exposed to the moisture in wood, and over time, this moisture may cause them to corrode. Fortunately, brass is resistant to corrosion. It can withstand the high moisture content of wood without corroding or rusting.

Heat Resistant

In addition to being corrosion resistant, brass wood screws are heat resistant. Heat is a concern for threaded fasteners. As you drive a threaded fastener into an object, it will create friction. Heat, of course, is a byproduct of friction. Too much heat can damage certain fasteners, but brass is known for its heat-resistant properties.


Brass wood screws are non-magnetic. Why does this matter exactly? Magnetic fasteners can interfere with electrical equipment. They can create interference that disrupts electrical signals. Brass, though, is a non-magnetic material. It’s still electrically conductive, but it doesn’t produce a magnetic field.

Variety of Sizes and Styles

You can find brass wood screws available in a variety of sizes and styles. Some of them are short, whereas others are long. There are also fully threaded brass wood screws and partially threaded brass wood screws. Regardless, you’ll have plenty of options from which to choose.
