6 Types of Industrial Crank Handles

Crank handles offer a simple and easy way to adjust machinery. Consisting of an arm-attached handle, they convert circular motion into rotary motion. As you turn a crank handle in a circular direction, the base of the arm will rotate within the machine or equipment to which it’s connected. There are many different types of crank handles, however. Below are six of the most common types.

#1) Fixed Grip

Fixed-grip crank handles are characterized by a fixed handle that doesn’t move. The handle is the part that you grab and turn. It’s typically perpendicular to the arm, which is connected to the machine or equipment. With a fixed grip, crank handles provide a stable surface to grab and turn.

#2) Revolving Grip

In addition to fixed-grip crank handles, there are revolving-grip crank handles. As the name suggests, revolving-grip crank handles feature a handle that spins or turns. The part of the handle that you grab turns. This is in stark contrast to fixed-grip crank handles, which have an unmovable handle. You can use either type to engage machinery and equipment. Some people simply prefer a fixed grip, whereas others prefer a revolving grip.

#3) Folding

You may come across folding crank handles. Consisting of a handle and arm, they look like most other types of crank handles. Folding crank handles, though, can be folded down. When you are finished using them, you can collapse the handle to conserve space. Folding crank handles are commonly used in applications where space is a concern.

#4) Ergo

There are also ergo crank handles. Short for “ergonomic,” they are naturally comfortable to grip and use. Ergo crank handles typically feature a soft, contoured handle. In comparison, other types of crank handles may have a harder handle.

#5) Plastic

Crank handles are often categorized according to the material from which they are made. Plastic crank handles, as the name suggests, are made of plastic. They are lightweight, inexpensive and resistant to many chemicals. These properties make them a great all-around choice.

#6) Metal

Aluminum crank handles are made entirely or mostly of metal. You can find them in different types of metal. Some of them are made of aluminum, for instance, whereas others are made of steel. Steel crank handles are generally stronger than aluminum crank handles. Regardless, all metal crank handles are heavier and more durable than their plastic counterparts, but they tend to cost more.
