Common Types of Indexing Plungers

Indexing plungers by Monroe

If you’re planning to use an indexing plunger, you’ll need to choose the right type. Indexing plungers, of course, are mechanical devices used to position, secure and align components. They typically feature a spring-loaded pin that, when engaged, locks the assembly in place. There are different types of indexing plungers, however, including the following.

Non-Locking

One of the most common types of indexing plungers is non-locking. They are designed to automatically re-engage when the knob or handle is released. Non-locking indexing plungers essentially rely entirely on the compression force of the spring. When you let go of the handle or knob, the spring will push the pin into the hole, assuming it’s properly aligned.

Locking

In addition to non-locking, there are locking indexing plungers. Also known as lock-out indexing plungers, they allow for a hands-free adjustment. The pin will stay retracted until manually released. The pin will essentially lock in position so that you can adjust the machinery with which it’s used.

Pull Knob

As the name suggests, pull knob indexing plungers feature a knob that you can pull. They have many of the same parts as most other indexing plungers, including a spring-loaded pin and a threaded body. Pull knob indexing plungers, though, are distinguished from other types by their knob. Pulling the knob will compress and retract the pin, allowing the components to move freely.

Push-Fit

While most indexing plungers feature a threaded body, others do not. Push-fit indexing plungers, for instance, are designed to be pushed into place. They don’t feature exterior threading. Instead, they have a smooth body without any threading. This smooth design allows them to be pressed or “pushed” into the mounting hole.

Extended Pin

When shopping for indexing plungers, you may come across extended pin. If a traditional indexing plunger is too short to engage, you may want to try an extended pin indexing plunger. They feature a longer-than-average pin.

L-Handle

Another common type of indexing plunger is L-handle. They are used for the same positioning and alignment applications as other types. L-handle indexing plungers, however, feature an L-shaped handle. This unique design makes them ergonomic and easy to use.

In Conclusion

Indexing plungers are available in several designs. From non-locking and locking models to pull knob, push-fit, extended pin and L-handle styles, each type offers unique advantages depending on the equipment and operating requirements. Just remember to choose the right type for your indexing application.
