5 Benefits of Platform Trucks

If your job requires you to regularly move heavy materials or objects, you may want to invest in a platform truck. Not to be confused with dollies, platform trucks are wheeled platforms with a flat base and a raised handle. These otherwise simple material handling carts make moving heavy loads a breeze. Here are the top five benefits of platform trucks.

#1) Superior Stability

Platform trucks offer superior stability when compared to other material handling carts, including dollies. The flat base is typically just 6 to 12 inches off the ground. Because they are so close to the ground, the load’s center of gravity will be low as well. You can pull or push a platform truck without fear of the load falling over.

#2) Ergonomic

Platform trucks are ergonomic. While available in different styles, they all have a conveniently raised handle. The handle is typically located several feet off the ground. As a result, you don’t have to bend your back to use a platform truck. After placing materials or objects on the flat bed, you can grab the handle to pull or push it. This ergonomic design minimizes stress on the body and helps to protect against musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

#3) Available in Different Lengths

You can find platform trucks in different lengths. Some of them are around 47 inches long, whereas others are up to 60 inches long. The longer the base, the more materials or objects it will hold. With that said, long platform trucks require more space to maneuver. If you’re planning to use it indoors where there’s limited space, you may want to choose a shorter platform truck.

#4) High Weight Capacity

Don’t let their simple design fool you into thinking platform trucks can only handle lightweight materials and objects. They are typically made of heavy-duty steel or aluminum, which can withstand very heavy loads. Many platform trucks, for instance, have a weight capacity of 1,600 or 2,000 pounds per caster. If a platform truck has four casters, that’s a total weight capacity of 6,400 to 8,000 pounds.

#5) Boosts Efficiency

A platform truck can make you a more efficient worker. Instead of carrying one or two items by hand, you can load up multiple boxes, parts, tools or objects on a platform truck and move them all at once. This reduces the number of trips required, which saves valuable time. In large warehouses where distances between storage areas and workstations are significant, these time savings add up quickly.
