5 Common Types of Pallet Jacks

Pallet jack

Pallet jacks simplify the process of moving loaded pallets. Also known as pallet pumps, they feature a pair of forks, wheels and a handle. You can slide the forks under a pallet, followed by raising the forks. Once raised, you can then push or pull the pallet. While all pallet jacks are used to move loaded pallets, however, there are different types, such as those listed below.

#1) Manual

Manual pallet jacks are characterized by a manual method of operation. They don’t have a motor. Instead, they are typically leverage hydraulics to assist with raising, as well as lowering, the forks. Pumping the handle pressurizes hydraulic fluid within a cylinder, which pushes a piston and subsequently lifts the forks. Releasing the handle, on the other hand, results in a loss of pressure while allowing the forks to drop.

#2) Powered

Not all pallet jacks are manually operated. Powered pallet jacks are powered by a motor. They typically feature a battery or battery bank that’s connected to a motor. With their motorized operation, powered pallet jacks can handle heavier loads and require less effort than their manual counterparts. The downside, though, is that they cost more and require regular charging and maintenance.

#3) Adjustable Width

There are adjustable-width pallet jacks. As the name suggests, they allow you to change the width of their forks. You can make the forks wider or narrower depending on the load. If you only move standard-size pallets, you probably don’t need an adjustable-width pallet jack. However, if you regularly move pallets in different sizes — or other objects in different sizes — you may want to consider an adjustable-width pallet jack.

#4) Stand Up

Another common type of pallet jack is stand up. Stand-up pallet jacks feature a small platform on which the operator stands. They are powered, heavy-duty material handling devices that are designed to quickly and easily lift heavy pallets. Rather than simply walking behind the pallet jack, you can ride it. Standing on this platform will allow you to travel with the stand-up pallet jack.

#5) Weighing Scale

Finally, weighing scale pallet jacks are characterized by the presence of built-in scales. They are commonly used in shipping and inventory management. With a weighing scale pallet jack, you can quickly identify the weight of loaded pallets. Lifting a loaded pallet with this type of pallet jack will instantly reveal its weight.
