6 Things to Consider When Choosing a Threaded Rod

Threaded rods are commonly used to join and anchor objects. Also known as simply as studs, they consist of a cylindrical piece of metal that’s fully threaded. They don’t have a pointed tip, nor do they have a head. Rather, threaded rods are long rods with external threading. Below are six things to consider when choosing a threaded rod.

#1) Length

You can find threaded rods in different sizes, with some being longer than others. There are short threaded rods measuring just 36 inches, and there are long threaded rods measuring up to 144 inches. Consider the application for which you intend to use, and just a threaded rod in an appropriate length.

#2) Coarse vs Fine Threads

Threaded rods are available in different thread types. Some of them have coarse threads, whereas others have fine threads. Threaded rods with coarse threads feature a larger pitch, resulting in fewer threads per inch. Threaded rods with fine threads, on the other hand, have a smaller pitch, resulting in fewer threads per inch.

#3) Material

Don’t forget to consider the material when choosing a threaded rod. While nearly all threaded rods are made of metal, you can find them in many different types of metal. Common materials in which threaded rods are made include steel, stainless steel, brass and aluminum.

#4) Corrosion Resistance

You should consider corrosion resistance when choosing a threaded rod. Since they are commonly used outdoors and in humid environments, threaded rods are often exposed to moisture. Over time, exposure to moisture can cause metal fasteners to corrode. Fortunately, however, threaded rods are often designed to resist corrosion. Stainless steel threaded rods, for instance, contain chromium, whereas other threaded rods may feature a protective layer of zinc for added protection against corrosion.

#5) Fastener Size

Something else to consider when choosing a threaded rod is the fastener size. Consisting of a set of numbers, the fastener size reveals the rod’s diameter, threads per inch and length. A threaded rod with a fastener size of 5/8″-11×6′, for instance, has a diameter of 5/8 inch, 11 threads per inch, and is 6 inches long.

#6) Specifications

Threaded rods are often designed according to strict manufacturing specifications. A193, for instance, is a common specification used for threaded rods. Developed by ASTM International, it ensures the reliability, performance and safety of fasteners. A193 includes multiple grades — B7, B8, B16, B7, etc. — each of which is designed for different applications.
