When most people think of rivets, they envision high-strength permanent mechanical fasteners used in aerospace and construction applications. Consisting of steel or various alloys, high-strength rivets such as these can withstand vibrations to create permanent joints. #1) Includes a Washer
Copper rivets with burrs are two-piece mechanical fasteners. They feature a solid copper rivet with a cylindrical shank and a flat head as well as a washer. The disc-shaped washer is known as a “burr.” It’s used in conjunction with the copper rivet to create strong, permanent joints.
#2) The Burr Hole Is Smaller Than the Rivet Shank
Unlike traditional bolt-and-washer sets, the hole in the washer or burr is smaller than the diameter of the rivet shank. This undersized design allows for a tight fit during installation. The copper rivet is placed through the parts, after which the burr is placed on top of the rivet. A setter tool is then used to force the burr down the exposed shank. The end result is a tight tolerance and a very strong joint.

After forcing the burr down the shank, the excess shank material is cut. Next, the cut shank is peened with a hammer, causing it to spread outward so that it locks the burr in place.

Not only are copper rivets with burrs malleable and easy to deform during installation; they are rust-proof. Copper can’t rust. Rust is a chemical reaction that occurs when iron is exposed to oxygen. Copper isn’t an iron alloy, and without any iron, it can’t rust.

Copper rivets with burrs offer excellent pull-through resistance. The burr is installed on the back end of the rivet’s shank. Once installed, the burr increases the rivet’s surface area, thereby preventing the rivet from being pulled through soft materials.
