How to Choose a Speed Ball Handle

Industrial handles are available in many different styles, one of which is speed ball. As shown in the adjacent photo, speed ball handles are characterized by a round, ball-shaped end. They are commonly used to adjust and control machinery. You can grab and turn a speed ball handle to engage the machine or equipment on which it’s installed. Here are several things to consider when choosing a speed ball handle.

Single vs Double Ball

Most speed ball handles fall under one of two categories: single or double ball. Single-ball handles have one handle and ball, whereas double-ball handles have two. If you’re planning to use it in a small space with limited clearance, you may want to choose the latter. A double-ball handle will provide you with two separate gripping surfaces. Even if you’re unable to grip one of the handles, you’ll have access to another handle.

Cast Iron

You can’t go wrong with a cast iron speed ball handle. Consisting of iron, carbon and silicon, cast iron is prized for its superior strength and durability. It’s stronger than other materials like aluminum, brass and even some varieties of steel.

With a cast iron speed ball handle, you’ll be able to apply maximum torque without fear or breaking or otherwise damaging the handle. Machines often require a lot of torque when making adjustments. Applying too much torque, though, may damage handles made of soft materials like plastic. Fortunately, this isn’t a concern with cast iron handles.

Reamed vs Tapped

Some speed ball handles, whereas others are tapped. What exactly is the difference between reamed and tapped speed ball handles?

Reamed speed ball handles feature a smooth hole in the center, which is used for installation. You can install them by sliding them over a similar-sized rod. Tapped speed ball handles feature a threaded hole in the center, which is also used for installation. Rather than having smooth walls, this hole is threaded with helical ridges. Threaded speed ball handles are designed for use with threaded rods.

Size

One of the most important things to consider when choosing a speed ball handle is the size. Like with other styles of industrial handles, you can find them in different sizes.

Pay attention to the handle diameter when choosing a speed ball handle. This measurement represents the handle’s total width from side to side. In addition to the handle diameter, you should consider the height. Tall speed ball handles require more space for installation than their shorter counterparts.
