How to Choose Commercial Wire Shelving

Wire shelving

Wire shelving is a smart investment for business owners. With its mesh-like construction, it offers superior airflow compared to other types of shelving. Air can easily flow through wire shelving, thereby protecting the stored materials or objects from excess humidity and dust.

While all wire shelving features a mesh-like construction for improved airflow, however, there are different types available. Here’s how to choose the perfect wire shelving for your business.

Make Sure It’s Corrosion-Resistant

You should choose wire shelving that’s resistant to corrosion. Warehouses, factories and other commercial environments often have high humidity levels. Over time, this airborne moisture vapor can saturate metal objects and construction to corrosion. Fortunately, wire shelving is available in corrosion-resistant materials, such as stainless steel, zinc-plated steel, powder-coated steel and aluminum.

Go With Casters for Mobility

Wire shelving is available with and without casters. If you’re planning to move it regularly, you may want to opt for casters for added mobility. There are typically four casters attached to the bottom, which allow you to easily move the wire shelving by rolling it.

Stationary wire shelving, on the other hand, has traditional posts or “legs” on the bottom. It’s more difficult to move, but stationary wire shelving typically has a higher load capacity.

Check the Dimensions

Don’t forget to check the dimensions when choosing wire shelving. Small shelving units measure 30x74x18 inches, whereas larger units can measure nearly twice that. And with larger dimensions, wire shelving will support more materials and objects. The downside, of course, is that it typically costs more and takes more space compared. You should choose wire shelving that’s not shorter than the height of the room or space where you intend to use it.

Check the Number of Shelves

In addition to the actual dimensions, you should check the number of shelves when choosing wire shelving. Most units have four to six shelves. Each shelf offers a surface on which to store materials and objects. With more shelves, you’ll have more surface space for storage.

Consider the Aesthetics

You should consider the aesthetics when choosing wire shelving. This is particularly important if you’re planning to use it in a customer-facing space. If a wire shelving unit is located in an area where it’s visible to customers, it will reflect upon your business. Fortunately, there are many stylish and attractive wire shelving units available, such as chrome finished and polished stainless steel units.
