Removing hinges from doors, gates or other objects can be challenging. You’ll typically have to place a narrow tool, such as a screwdriver, below the pin and gently tap it upwards with a hammer or mallet.
Most hinges feature two leafs that are held together with a pin. By knocking out the pin, you can pull the two leafs apart. Pins can become stuck, however. Over time, corrosion or debris may bind the pin to the knuckle, making it difficult to remove. Fortunately, lift-off hinges offer a solution. Also known as detachable hinges, you can remove them by lifting the door or gate to which they are attached. Here’s how to choose the right lift-off hinges for your needs.
Material
You can find lift-off hinges in different materials, including stainless steel, carbon steel, brass, aluminum and plastic. Stainless steel lift-off hinges are durable and corrosion-resistant, making them a popular choice for humid environments, such as the outdoors.
Carbon steel lift-off hinges offer superior strength but lack the corrosion-resistant properties of their stainless steel counterparts. Aluminum lift-off hinges are lightweight and corrosion-resistant. Finally, plastic lift-off hinges are lightweight, corrosion-resistant and protected from oils, solvents and other chemicals.
Leaf Size
Something else to consider when choosing when choosing lift-off hinges is the size of the leafs. Like traditional hinges, most lift-off hinges feature two leafs. A pin is permanently affixed to one of the leafs so that you can lift off the adjacent hinge. The size of the leafs, though, may vary. Some lift-off hinges have large leafs with a wide diameter, whereas others have small leafs with a narrow diameter.
Lift-off hinge with large leafs typically support more weight than those with small leafs. However, they also require more space for installation. You’ll need a larger surface area on the door and frame to install a set of lift-off hinges with large leafs.
Right Hand vs Left Hand
Lift-off hinges are available in right hand and left hand styles. Right-hand hinges are designed to be opened by pulling with your right hand, whereas left-hand hinges are designed to be opened by pulling with your left hand.
To determine which style you need, stand in front of the door or gate with which you intend to use the new lift-off hinges. If the old hinges are on your left, you’ll need a set of left-hand hinges. If the old hinges are on your right, you’ll need a set of right-hand hinges.
Finish
You can also find lift-off hinges in different finishes. The finish is the outer layer. It enhances the aesthetics of the hinge while also providing additional protection from the elements.
Some lift-off hinges have a zinc finish. They are covered in a thin layer of zinc. Other lift-off hinges are powder-coated. Regardless, the finish consists of an outer layer of separate material.
