Side Pull Hoist Rings: What You Should Know

Side pull hoist ring

Hoist rings are available in different styles. There are pivoting hoist rings, for instance, and there are swivel hoist rings. You may also come across side pull hoist rings.

All hoist rings are used in lifting applications. They are used to connect the chain or sling to an object. Side pull hoist rings, however, feature a different design than conventional hoist rings.

What Are Side Pull Hoist Rings?

Side pull hoist rings are fastening rings that are designed to lift objects from the side. They consist of a heavy-duty bolt along with a triangular- or U-shaped ring. You can secure a side pull hoist ring to the side of an object with the bolt. You can then place a chain or sling through the triangular- or U-shaped ring.

Side Pull Hoist Rings vs Conventional Hoist Rings

Not all hoist rings are designed to pull objects from the side. Conventional hoist rings are designed to pull objects from the top.

Both conventional hoist rings and side pull hoist rings feature the same components. They typically have a heavy-duty bolt along with a triangular- or U-shaped ring. The difference is that side pull hoist rings are designed to lift and “pull” objects from the side, whereas conventional hoist rings are designed to lift objects from the top.

Benefits of Side Pull Hoist Rings

Most side pull hoist rings are self-aligning. They can rotate 360 degrees while automatically aligning themselves in the direction of the load. As a result, you don’t have to worry about the chain or sling snagging on them. Self-aligning side pull hoist rings will rotate freely while aligning themselves in the direction of the load.

Side pull hoist rings are available in different finishes. Black oxide, for example, is a common finish in which side pull hoist rings are made. Side pull hoist rings are coated in black oxide to protect their underlying metal from damage. Black oxide essential creates a barrier over the underlying material. If a side pull hoist ring is made of alloy steel, it may feature a black oxide finish to protect the steel from corrosion, scratches and other forms of damage.

Like most hoist rings, side pull hoist rings are incredibly strong. After all, they are used in lifting applications, so they must be designed to accommodate heavy loads. Some side pull hoist rings are rated for 800 pounds. Others are rated for up to 10,000 pounds.
