5 Things to Consider When Choosing an Aluminum Knob

Aluminum knob

If you’re looking to buy an aluminum knob, there are several things you need to consider. Aluminum knobs are commonly used in clamping and fastening applications. They feature an all-aluminum construction that’s stronger and more durable than plastic knobs. Once connected to a piece of equipment, you can grab and turn an aluminum knob.

#1) Style

Aluminum knobs are available in different styles. Some of them only feature two tabs. Other aluminum knobs, such as the one depicted above, feature four tabs. With four tabs, you’ll have an easier time gripping the aluminum knob as you turn it.

#2) Tapped vs Reamed

You should check to see if the aluminum knob is tapped or reamed. Tapping and reaming are machining processes that involve the creation of a hole. Most aluminum knobs feature a threaded hole in the center, which allows them to connect to a threaded rod. Tapped aluminum knobs, however, are made by cutting a hole directly in the center using a tap, whereas reamed aluminum knobs are made using a high-precision cutting tool to enlarge an existing hole.

#3) Thread Size

Don’t forget to consider the thread size when choosing an aluminum knob. Whether tapped or reamed, most aluminum knobs feature a threaded hole. You can connect them to machines and equipment with a threaded rod of the same size. The bigger an aluminum knob’s threaded hole, the bigger the threaded rod it will support.

Common thread sizes for aluminum knobs include the following:

  • 1/4 -20 inch
  • 5/16 -18 inch
  • 3/8 -16 inch
  • 1/2 -13 inch

#4) Surface Texture

What type of surface texture does the aluminum knob? There are smooth aluminum knobs with little or no surface texture. There are other aluminum knobs, though, with a knurled or grainy surface texture. As you rub your hand across the later, you’ll feel this texture. Textured aluminum knobs such as this are particularly useful in applications where you’ll be frequently exposed to oils or liquids. Even if your hands get wet, you’ll still be able to easily grip a textured aluminum knob.

#5) Knob Size

Aluminum knobs are available in different sizes as well. Some of them are large, whereas others are smaller and more compact. Large aluminum knobs are ideal for fastening and clamping applications that require a lot of force. They offer more surface area to grip and turn, resulting in greater turning power. Small aluminum knobs, on the other hand, are ideal for applications that don’t require a lot of force.
