Anti-rack locks are commonly used in transportation and industrial applications. You can find them on semi-trailers, shipping containers, commercial enclosures and more. Like most locks, anti-rack locks are designed to hold doors shut. Anti-rack locks, however, feature a unique rod-based design that distinguishes them from traditional locks.
#1) Multi-Point Engagement
Anti-rack locks use a multi-point engagement system. They feature a long vertical rod that extends the full height of the door with which they are used. You can secure the door by pulling the handle. Doing so will lock the vertical rod at both the top and bottom, allowing for multi-point engagement.
#2) Better Load Distribution
Because they use a multi-point engagement system, anti-rack locks offer better load distribution than traditional locks. Traditional locks, such as deadbolts, typically use a single engagement point. They focus the load on a single area — typically a strike plate or latching mechanism. Anti-rack locks use multiple points of engagement to spread the load across a larger surface area.
#3) Protects Against Racking
Anti-rack locks receive their namesake from their ability to protect against racking. Racking is a phenomenon that involves the distortion of a door within its frame. It often occurs when heavy cargo shifts and moves during transit. Anti-rack locks prevent racking by holding doors securely in place.
#4) Reduced Wear and Tear
Another benefit of anti-rack locks is reduced wear and tear. When doors shut, some of the force will be transferred to the hardware. Hinges and fasteners, for instance, will absorb some of this force. Over time, this can lead to damage or even failure. Anti-rack locks protect hardware from premature wear and tear by keeping the door properly aligned and ensuring the load is evenly distributed.
#5) Sealing
If you’re worried about rain, moisture, dust or debris entering a container, you may want to use an anti-rack lock. Anti-rack locks do more than just hold doors shut; they seal them. They essentially pull doors tight against the adjacent frame at multiple points. The end result is a strong seal that keeps out environmental contaminants.
#6) Smooth Operation
Anti-rack locks promote a smooth operation. Doors can become difficult to open and close once misaligned. If the door isn’t aligned with the frame, it may “stick” — or it may fail to stay closed. Anti-rack locks offer a solution. They eliminate problems such as these by maintaining proper alignment.
