Frame Gaskets: A Reliable and Versatile Sealing Solution

For a reliable and versatile sealing solution, look no further than frame gaskets. Like all gaskets, they prevent unwanted leakage. They seal critical spaces so that air, fluids and gases stay where they are supposed to.

What Are Frame Gaskets?

Frame gaskets are mechanical seals that sit between the mating surface of two or more parts. They are known as “frame gaskets” because they feature a frame-like design that sits along the perimeter of the respective parts.

Frame gaskets typically don’t seal the entire mating surface. Rather, they sit along the outer edges of the mating surface — similar to a picture frame. The center stays open, while the outer edges offer an air- and fluid-tight sealing path.

Frame gaskets are commonly used in the following sealing applications:

  • Air leaks
  • Fluid leaks
  • Gas leaks
  • Moisture ingress
  • Dust and debris ingress
  • Pressure loss

What Are Frame Gaskets Made Of?

You can find frame gaskets in different materials, some of which include ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM), silicone, neoprene and more.

EPDM offers excellent weather resistance and has a temperature range of about minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Silicone is known for its nontoxic, food-safe properties and has a temperature range of about minus 100 degrees Fahrenheit to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Neoprene is a popular choice for marine-related applications and has a temperature range of about minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

How Frame Gaskets Protect Against Leaks

Frame gaskets protect against leaks by compressing along the outer edges of the mating surface with which they are used. While different gasket materials have different properties, they all recover and return to their original shape after being compressed. This characteristic, known as compression set, allows frame gaskets to create an air- and fluid-tight seal. Frame gaskets are sandwiches between two surfaces to the point where they compress and create a tight seal.

Benefits of Frame Gaskets

Frame gaskets are highly effective at sealing mating surfaces. You can just place two surfaces together and expect them to offer a tight seal. Even if the surfaces are completely flat, internal pressure may result in a leak. If the interior of the mating surface has pressurized fluid or gas, it will push its way out. Frame gaskets prevent this from happening by compressing to ensure that no air or fluid escapes and no debris enters.

Frame gaskets are distinguished from other types of gaskets by their open center. They don’t completely cover or smother the mating surface. Instead, they only create a seal around the perimeter. With their open design, frame gaskets allow air to move around internal components.
