Manufacturing remains one of the country’s most vital industries. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), more than 12.4 million Americans are employed in the industry, with manufacturing businesses generating a gross domestic product (GDP) of approximately $2.2 trillion in the third quarter of 2013. In the past, manufacturing companies have outsourced their operations overseas to save money, but many are now bringing those jobs back to the United States — a process known as “reshoring.”
Reshoring is important because it brings jobs back to the United States, thereby promoting a healthier job market and overall economy. Of course, some manufacturing companies are more eager to reshore their jobs than others. According to a study cited by USA Today, a few manufacturing companies are going out of their way to reshore jobs.
Apple
Not surprisingly, Apple ranked at the top of the list for American manufacturing companies that are reshoring jobs. The study found that Apple, which is based in Cupertino, California, reshored 22,200 jobs. Earlier this year, an Apple spokesperson said the company plans to spend more than $30 billion in capital expenditures in the United States within the next five years. This investment includes the Advanced Manufacturing Fund, which specifically focuses on investments in domestic manufacturing processes and technology.
General Motors
Another top-ranked American manufacturing company that’s reshoring jobs back to the United States is General Motors. According to the study, the iconic automaker has brought back nearly 13,000 jobs to the states. Last year, General Motors said that it was expanding several of its factories in a move that would create up to 7,000 new jobs. Globally, Generally Motors has around 180,000 workers, many of whom work and reside in the United States.
Boeing
Coming in third is Boeing. The American aerospace manufacturing company has worked hard to cement a strong presence in the commercial aviation market. Reports show that Boeing has reshored some 7,725 jobs. This is part of the company’s Reshoring Initiative, which is designed to bring back jobs to the United States.
Ford
Another automaker that’s taken a keen interest on reshoring jobs back to the United States is Ford. Based in Michigan, the Ford Motor Company is the second-largest automaker in the United States, surpassed only by General Motors. According to the study cited by USA Today, Ford has reshored about 4,200 jobs back to the United States. Last year, Ford said that was investing $700 million to create around 700 new jobs in a facility expansion project.
