How to Choose a Hydraulic Clamp

Hydraulic clamp by Monroe Engineering

Some clamps offer a higher level of security and stability for the objects with which they are used than others. In terms of clamping force, few compare to hydraulic clamps. Hydraulic clamps feature oil-filled passages that, when pressurized, clamp down using more force than that of other types of clamps. If you’re looking to buy a hydraulic clamp, though, you’ll need to choose the right one. Below are several tips on how to choose the right hydraulic clamp.

Single vs Double Acting

Most hydraulic clamps use one of two methods of operation: single acting or double acting. Double-acting hydraulic clamps are characterized by the use of oil on both sides of the moving piston. They feature two oil-filled passages, with one on each side of the piston. Single-acting hydraulic clamps, on the other hand, feature a simpler design that uses less oil. They are inexpensive and easy to use, but single-acting hydraulic clamps aren’t suitable for all applications.

Clamping Force

Of course, you should consider the clamping force when choosing a hydraulic clamp. All hydraulic clamps apply a clamping force. They use oil — specifically pressurized oil — to apply a clamping force to an object. Clamping forces, however, can vary depending on the type of hydraulic clamp. If you’re looking to buy a hydraulic clamp, you’ll need to consider the clamping force. Clamping force is typically measured in pounds. Some hydraulic clamps are capable of applying over 5,000 pounds, whereas others apply 3,000 to 4,000 pounds.

Size

It’s important to choose a hydraulic clamp in an appropriate size. Like all clamps, hydraulic clamps are used for work-holding applications. To use a hydraulic clamp on an object, it needs to be the correct size. If it’s too small, the hydraulic clamp may fail to secure the object in place. You can avoid these headaches by choosing a hydraulic clamp in the right size for your work-holding application.

Adjustments

Finally, you should consider the adjustments when choosing a hydraulic clamp. In other words, how do you adjust the hydraulic clamp when using it? Many hydraulic clamps feature arms for adjustments. You can adjust the clamping force by engaging the hydraulic clamp’s arm. Rotating the arm clockwise, for instance, will typically increase its clamping force. In comparison, rotating the arm counterclockwise will decrease its clamping force. Other hydraulic clamps use a different method for adjustments, so you should familiarize yourself with the adjustment method.
